Place your peeled and cubed sweet potatoes into a large pot. Cover them with salted water by about an inch. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium low and simmer uncovered for 10 to ⏱️ 15 minutes, or until fork-tender. Drain the water completely and return the potatoes to the warm pot.

While the potatoes are still hot, use a potato masher or a sturdy fork to break them down until smooth and fluffy. For an extra silky texture, you can use a hand mixer or an immersion blender.

Add the room temperature butter to the hot potatoes. Stir until melted and absorbed. Slowly pour in the warmed milk, starting with half a cup, mixing until desired creamy consistency is reached. Add a bit more milk if too thick. If using, add the sour cream or cream cheese now.
