Place the rice in a fine mesh sieve. Rinse under cold running water, gently swishing with your hands, until the water runs clear. Allow to drain thoroughly.

In a medium saucepan, combine the rice and 1 ¾ cups water. Add the salt and oil or butter, if using.

Bring the rice to a simmer over medium-low heat. Allow it to simmer, uncovered, for ⏱️ 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook until the rice is tender, 15 to ⏱️ 18 minutes. Remove from the heat.

Allow the rice to sit, covered, for ⏱️ 10 minutes. This will allow the water to absorb and help ensure fluffy rice. Fluff with a fork before serving.
