These crispy onion rings are easy to make at home with a simple buttermilk batter and a quick fry. Serve them hot and golden with your favorite dipping sauce.

In a deep pot or deep fryer, heat 2 to 3 inches of oil to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, whisk together 1 cup flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, paprika, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.

In a small bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and 1 tablespoon oil. Add buttermilk mixture to flour mixture and stir until just combined. (Batter should be thick but pourable, like pancake batter.)

Toss onion rings in 1/4 cup flour for a light dredge (this helps the batter stick). Dip onion rings in batter and shake off excess.

Working in batches (do not crowd), carefully add battered rings to hot oil. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 2 to ⏱️ 3 minutes per side, turning once.
