Preheat the oven to 400°. Grease an 8×8 pan with butter. Place the cherries in a medium-sized bowl and sprinkle with the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Stir to coat the fruit and drizzle with almond extract and lemon juice. Set aside while assembling the topping.
